Why Choose Our Residential Flatwork

Legacy General Services specializes in residential concrete flatwork across the NW Metro Minneapolis area. Our crews handle every phase — excavation, subgrade compaction, aggregate subbase, forming, rebar and wire mesh reinforcement, ready-mix pouring, screeding, floating, edging, brooming, and saw cutting control joints.

Every residential slab starts with proper subbase preparation. We excavate to the correct depth, compact the subgrade, place aggregate base material, and compact again — creating a stable foundation that prevents settling and cracking.

We use air-entrained concrete (3,500-4,000 PSI) designed for Minnesota freeze-thaw cycles. Proper water-cement ratio, slump control, and curing compound application ensure long-term durability.

All residential flatwork includes control joints saw cut at proper intervals, expansion joint installation at structures, and proper grading for positive drainage away from buildings.

Signs You Need Residential Flatwork

1. Existing concrete is cracked beyond repair

When cracks exceed 1/4 inch wide, show displacement, or cover more than 30% of the surface, replacement delivers better value than repeated patching.

2. Settled or uneven slabs creating trip hazards

Significant settling indicates subbase failure. While leveling can help minor cases, severe settlement often requires demolition, haul-off, new subbase, and fresh pour.

3. Surface scaling and spalling from freeze-thaw damage

When the top layer of concrete is flaking, pitting, or delaminating extensively, the slab has lost its structural integrity and needs replacement.

4. Building a new home or adding living space

New construction requires properly engineered flatwork — from driveway and sidewalk to patio and garage floor — all coordinated for proper grades and drainage.

Our Residential Flatwork Process

1

Step 1Site Assessment & Layout

Evaluate existing conditions, mark utilities, establish grades and drainage slopes, and confirm dimensions with the homeowner.

2

Step 2Demolition & Excavation

Remove existing concrete (if applicable), excavate to proper depth, and haul debris off-site. Grade the subgrade for uniform support.

3

Step 3Subbase Preparation

Place and compact class 5 aggregate base material in lifts. Verify compaction meets specifications for the intended load (foot traffic, vehicle, etc.).

4

Step 4Forming & Reinforcement

Set forms to correct elevation and alignment. Install rebar, wire mesh, or fiber mesh reinforcement per project specifications.

5

Step 5Concrete Pour & Finishing

Coordinate ready-mix delivery. Pour, screed, bull float, edge, and apply broom finish or decorative texture. Place control joints at proper spacing.

6

Step 6Curing & Protection

Apply curing compound or cover with plastic sheeting. Protect from traffic during the 7-day initial cure period. Saw cut control joints within 24 hours.

FAQs About Residential Flatwork

How thick should a residential concrete driveway be?

Standard residential driveways require 4-inch thickness for passenger vehicles. If heavy trucks or equipment will use the driveway, 5-6 inches with additional reinforcement is recommended. All driveways need a compacted aggregate subbase beneath the slab.

How long before I can drive on new concrete?

Light foot traffic is safe after 24-48 hours. Vehicles can typically drive on new concrete after 7 days. Heavy loads should wait 28 days for full cure. Actual timing depends on mix design, weather, and slab thickness.

Do I need rebar in my concrete patio?

Rebar or wire mesh reinforcement is recommended for all concrete flatwork in Minnesota. Reinforcement helps the slab resist cracking from freeze-thaw cycles, soil movement, and thermal expansion. We typically use #4 rebar on 18-inch centers or 6x6 welded wire mesh.

What is the best time of year to pour concrete in Minnesota?

The ideal pouring season is May through October when temperatures consistently stay above 50°F. We can pour in cooler weather with heated blankets and winter mix additives, but spring through fall provides the best curing conditions.
